Our mission
Our aim is community-oriented development
in sync with nature conservation
in and around Chitungulu village, Zambia
The Chitungulu Foundation takes its name from a remote Zambian village bordering Luambe National Park in the Luangwa Valley, eastern Zambia. Due to its close proximity to a national park, there is a high level of human-wildlife conflict in and around Chitungulu. Elephants, in particular, pose a constant threat to both the villagers’ personal safety and their food security. Together with the community we work in various environmentally-sustainable, income-generating projects which, in conjunction with small-scale ecotourism, help building a more resilient and well-informed community which can make conscious decisions about its own preferred development path. By promoting sustainable development, we aim to raise living standards without detrimental effects for nature in one of the last, great wilderness areas on earth.
In the second phase 2021-2027 of our partnership with the residents of Chitungulu are we focusing on conservation education, climate-smart agriculture, organic horticulture, nutrition, and beekeeping. We also continue to sponsor vocational training for the youth.
